Key Factors in a Successful Kitchen Remodel – July 2025

Overview: There are several key factors in any kitchen remodel. Some may be unique to your home but not common. Some are very common if not downright universal. It starts with knowing what you specifically want to achieve. In other words, a goal or vision.

  • Your Goal/Vision – It pays to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. This will inform or impact every decision you make moving forward. For instance, are you planning to stay within the existing space, expand but stay in the current structure, or build an addition on to the home?
  • Find the Right Lead Person or Organization – Depending on what you are planning to do a designer, architect or design build firm will be needed. This is where you pick the right person or organization to lead. Take your time and choose carefully.

    • Initial Design – Now is when you can expect to start spending money. Here are some of the things the initial and final design should include.

    • An appliance package: Performance comes from appliances.

    • Cabinetry and millwork layout: Organization and Workflow are addressed here.

    • Surfaces or Countertop Space: For working, eating, entertaining or specialty space for a coffee bar or beverage center.
    • Spending Target or Wish: I say wish because you will not have an actual budget until you have a completed design and proposal using hard numbers and as few allowances as possible. This will take time, and you shouldn’t expect to get it for free. However, the lead person should know your target and tell you if it’s realistic.
  • Scope of Work: Once you have a design you can move forward to the “Scope of Work”. This is where the budget and details are developed. This will take time on your part and the lead organization. Depending on your choice of lead organization/person it may require going out for bids or if you are working with a larger company, they may keep it “in house”. Either way, more time is required, hence you can expect to write another check.

Assuming you have come to terms with the scope and cost you are ready to decide on how and when to move forward.

Cautionary Notes:

Good communication is needed from start to end. Understand what you are getting in terms of deliverables at each stage.

Some remodeling companies that keep all things in house will probably not release drawings or detailed documents to you to go out for bid on your own. This can be both a blessing and a curse. The best way to avoid the latter is clear communications.
